Living Wills

Our Private Client department is led by partner, Jacqueline Dow.  Jacqueline was admitted as a solicitor in 1992, joined the firm in 2018 and was assumed as a partner in 2020.

A Living Will (also known as an Advance Directive) is a legal document which sets out the circumstances in which a person does not want to receive certain medical treatments should they be unable to communicate their wishes at some time in the future.   The document does not have any legal authority, but allows a person to express their wishes about the extent to which medical staff should persist in keeping them alive following a major medical event, such as a stroke, paralysis or the latter stages of a terminal diagnosis.    It can be a useful addition to a Power of Attorney and allows us to provide guidance to Attorneys should they seek advice on their welfare responsibilities in such a circumstance.

We can prepare a Living Will at the same time as preparing a Power of Attorney, and in that event we would not charge an additional fee.   However, if we are instructed simply to prepare a Living Will alone, then we are able to charge a fixed fee.  In the ordinary circumstance, our fixed fee for Living Wills are:

Single Living Will - £150.00 plus VAT (£30.00)

Living Wills for couples - £200.00 plus VAT (£40.00)
